Political filing period opens today

By Jennie Christensen

The 2010 candidate filing period opens today, Friday March 12 and continues through next Friday, March 19, a period Cache County Clerk Jill Zollinger says is two days shorter than in the past.

Normally, the clerk's office is closed on Fridays but Zollinger says her office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. both today and next Friday. She says there a lot of offices up for grabs.

The terms of three county council members are expiring: Craig Peterson, Gordon Zilles and Bryan Chambers. Chambers, the only Democrat on the seven-member council, has said he will not be running again. Val Potter, a former mayor of North Logan, is expected to file for the northeast district seat as a Republican.

Other county-elected positions are up for grabs including clerk, executive, attorney and others. There are also those of state representative, U.S. Senate and Utah governor as well.
