Ag Day BBQ cancelled

By Cache Valley Daily

After months of planning and collaboration, the committee for the annual Utah Agricultural Products Barbecue has announced that the barbecue has been canceled for 2010 due to multiple scheduling conflicts.

Committee member Lisa Allen says the committee found it a challenge to identify an appropriate date for the barbecue that coincides with a Utah State University home football game but does not conflict with the Utah State Fair and avoids potential bad weather late in the season.

Allen says the decision to cancel was not made lightly because the event is a highlight for Aggie families. Revenues from the Utah Agricultural Products Barbecue go toward funding scholarships for College of Agriculture students.

The event showcases agricultural products that are prevalent in Utah and donations and revenues have funded more than 60 scholarships totaling $72,00 over the past decade.

I concur with the BOO! comment. BOOOOO! I read this article as "Ag BBQ committee doesn't want to put in the effort!" Why form a committee to make excuses? Didn't the state fair end on the 19th of September? Why not do it before the BYU game this week. The weather will be in the 8o's and it will be the biggest crowd of the year! Boooooo!

RE: Boo's comment The state fair is a conflict for many of the agricultural producers and commodity groups who sponsor the BBQ, donating their time and food. No one took this decision lightly. RE: Don's comment about the weather. It's rained on the event before and numbers were way down. Yes, they're "just serving food" but people cook, serve and eat outside, a lot of work for an event that would likely put a few die hard people in the rain or snow and waste a lot of food. The BBQ will be back.

Re: Boo! A lot of the Ag students are involved in the fair in the ag competitions.

Shaun: Brent Guy may be gone, but USU football still sucks.

Did I read right? "avoids potential bad weather late in the season." THAT is as lame as can get! For heavens sake they are just serving food. Not like it's a pageant or a parade. Half of all events could be cancelled it that was a valid excuse!

This is a very poor decision. We are Utah State Aggie Fans not Utah State Fair Fans. Through rain and shine this has been an annual tradition with great financial benefits. Boo to the committee!

I hope it comes back next year. My family makes a special trip every year to attend. Now there is less of a reason to suffer through a football game.
