Bowen praises EnergySolutions decision

By Jennie Christensen

Morgan Bowen says it was great news to learn that EnergySolutions has decided to abandon its plans to dispose of nuclear waste from Italy in Utah.

Bowen is a Democrat from Hyde Park challenging incumbent Republican First District Congressman Rob Bishop in the November election. Bowen says it was interesting that the company made the announcement to Democratic U.S. Representative Jim Matheson.

"I think probably because Congressman Matheson was a co-sponsor on the bill to prohibit foreign radioactive waste from coming into the country," Bowen exclaimed. "I think that's why he became the point of contact on that.

He was the one Congressman who stood up to it and it wasn't even in his district. It was in Congressman Bishop's district and, of course, Congressman Bishop turned a blind eye to it for a long time."

Bowen says Bishop has also received substantial contributions from EnergySolutions, which polls have shown the people of Utah do not want.

Let us not forget that it is a fact that no one has ever died from an acute radiation dose in the western production of nuclear power. This includes the storage of nuclear by-products at the Clive facility. Not one fetus, not one child, not one adult has ever received a deadly dose of acute radiation in the western production of nuclear power. On the other hand people die every week in this State because we can not properly fund the social programs that the elderly and poor so desperately rely on. This lack of funding is getting worse. I just recently read that the hundreds of people in this State who rely on free hiv/aids drugs will not be able to receive them anymore. One can expect our State like other places in the world that have cut funding for antiretroviral drugs to have a significant increase in hiv/aids cases. The safe storage of foreign waste at the Clive nuclear depository could have easily funded this and many other life saving programs. Jfarmer9
