County looking to crack down on Spice

"Spice" is a brand name of, and generic slang for, an herbal mixture laced with synthetic cannabinoids. Right now it is legal in Utah and Cache County but that may not be the case for long.

At Tuesday night's Cache County Council meeting, Sheriffs Detective Mikelshan Bartschi told the County Council Spice products are sold online, in smoke shops and at some gas stations as an incense.

The products are usually smoked for their marijuana-like effects. Bartschi says Spice causes respiratory problems and has even been known to cause deaths. He says Logan Regional Hospital's emergency room has been seeing one or two overdoses a week.

Councilmembers and County Attorney James Swink expressed concern and said they will consider an ordinance making Spice products illegal. The council has jurisdiction only over the unincorporated part of the county.
