Green Canyon fire allowed to burn

Forest Service officials say a slow moving blaze in the Mount Naomi Wilderness area about 10 miles northeast of the entrance to Green Canyon will be allowed to burn.

Forest Service spokeswoman Kathy Jo Pollock says the lightning-caused blaze has already burned approximately one-third of an acre of sub-alpine fir. She says the fire will be allowed to play its natural role in eliminating excessive and hazardous fuel accumulation.

Pollock says allowing the fire to burn returns nutrients to the soil and creates a natural mosaic pattern of new-and-old growth vegetation.
