Heritage Center lays off Sidwell

By Jennie Christensen

After serving five years as program director at the American West Heritage Center, David Sidwell has been laid off. Sidwell confirmed the layoff on Wednesday, saying he was told that it was done for economic reasons.

Sidwell says he was shocked and disappointed because he loved the job and since he's been there the center has made great strides in public perception and visitations.

Quote '' I agree with the previous comment. The AWHC is supposed to be a non-profit organization yet they are still charging children outrageous amounts to attend their programs, activities, events etc. Maybe now with the directors salary eliminated, the center can decrease the charge to attend their programs. Thus, increasing attendance. Maybe someone can take the directors position and volunteer their time. My family has not been attending the events because they are just to costly.'' i agree 100% !!!!!!!!!!

Sidwell deserves to be gone, he was a complete and total failure. It is interesting the folks over at cachevalleydaily.com do not pay closer attention to posted comments and allow stupid comments by stupid people that have NOTHING to do with the story and are no more than morons making senseless attacks in an effort to belittle someone that is in no way part of the story.

It is bad news for everyone in a community when someone loses employment. Would compassion be more effective than bashing in this case? A family has lost their income. And, this is a family who made personal sacrifices for the AWHC- a place they love! So, this is a love loss for them as well. The loss for our community comes when an organization established to help maintain this areas heritage has to cut creative personnel. Mr. Sidwell brought historic validity to the AWHC programs. In promoting Cache Valley it is not uncommon to mention the wonderful events at the AWHC. It is unlikely the level of quality can be maintained with limited staff. Good luck to the Sidwell family.

Sorry to see Sidwell go. Attendance has been up and the AWHC has had some amazing programs and activities this past spring and summer. Sidwell did a great job - the baby cubs from Bear World were adorable and the AWHC has been crowded every time we were there! Dave Sidwell was not a failure - he (and many others) made history come alive!

Actually, Dr. Sidwell had little to do with money. He was in charge of programs and creating a fun place for families in the area and for tourists visiting Cache Valley. As I understand it, attendance is way up from five years ago when we first got the position. There are certainly a lot more things to do there now. Five years ago, it seemed like a dying place. Now it's very alive and vivacious.

The AWHC has many problems, just one being financial. I think Dave did the best he could with what he had, but the buck had to stop with someone and he was the highest up that could get the axe. This is similar to a football coach getting fired because the team doesn't meet the high expectations of the fans/directors/etc. I don't think Dave is entirely to blame for the financial and other problems at AWHC, but he was probably the easiest to blame. Good luck Dave in the future... and thanks for running AWHC the past few years.

Again, Steve.... get counseling, and possible a degree in business. Non profit doesn't mean free. There are costs involved. And maybe try to find a positive attitude. I swear - if they reported the Sky is Blue - you would argue it isn't.

Steve are you kidding me? This is horrible news! You are just jealous and as slanderous as you ever have been. In fact sir, you frighten me. AWHC has become a booming Cache Valley attraction under Sidwells direction. As a frequent, glad to pay, patron I love the variety of programs they provide. RE dito: Do your homework on what non-profit means and what running one entails! You want them to boost attendence??? You've obviously not attended many events. Be careful, you're lack of knowledge is showing.

This is GREAT news! Sidwell has been an ineffective program director since his first day on the job, it is about time the AWHC board made this move. Before all you bleeding heart supports of Sidwell starty with your nonsense you should realize that if he had been effective in his jod the AWHC would be more fiscally sound as "his" programs would have brought in more revenue. He is a total complete failure - it is a shame our local news organizations have not pointed out his failures and incompetence. Now all that needs to be done to improve the quality of arts in Cahce Valley is to "layoff Wally Bloss and Marianne Sidwell and put an end to the power grab and waste of taxpayer dollars.
