An open letter from Utah State Athletics Director Scott Barnes:
I know you have been closely following Wednesday¹s news that Nevada and Fresno State announced they are leaving the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) to join the Mountain West Conference (MWC). In a 12-hour period we have gone from looking forward to participating in an expanded WAC with a bright and prosperous future to one of some uncertainty.
Recently, Utah State, under President Stan Albrecht¹s strong leadership, played a major role in exploring the possibility of bringing BYU into the WAC. As of Tuesday, BYU was on the verge of joining the WAC in all sports but football.
As part of the WAC¹s conversations with BYU, the current eight conference members (excluding departing Boise State) agreed to remain together as a conference for at least five years. This stability was important to BYU, to other current members, and would have been critical as other expansion options were explored. WAC members signed a letter of commitment that included a $5M membership buyout. When the possibility of BYU leaving became known, MWC leadership contacted three WAC members inquiring about their interest in joining the MWC. Utah State was the first of these three contacts.
At the point in time when Utah State was contacted by the MWC we had a binding agreement with the WAC and were well positioned with nine members, which included BYU. We were simply committed to uphold our agreement with fellow WAC members. We respectfully declined MWC interest and believed all WAC members would remain committed to our agreement.
As the WAC currently stands we are a nine-member conference for the 2010-11 academic year and an eight-member conference in 2011-12 (after Boise State departs). The NCAA minimum to be recognized as an affiliated conference is six members, which the WAC still meets after Nevada and Fresno State leave.
This is a dynamic phase in college athletic conference alignments. We anticipate additional changes in conference membership on a national scale for the foreseeable future.
That said, Utah State Intercollegiate Athletics continues to be in growth mode. We have excellent coaches in place who have recruited and mentored nearly 350 student-athletes who are excelling in competition and in the classroom.
We have created significantly more resources in operating budgets, enhanced facilities, and have developed a strategic plan to guide us in our continued growth and success.
I do not take lightly the negative effect that recent changes in the composition of the WAC will have on us, but these are not insurmountable. We have persevered through many changes in the athletic landscape and are prepared and better equipped to do so again. We will continue to focus on building programs that win championships, graduate talented studentathletes, as well as excite and unify Aggies everywhere.
Go Aggies!

What really tick's me off here, is if yBu wanted to join the WAC Albrecht should have never been involved. If yBu's president came calling and wanted some help to get out of the MWC all he had to do was a few mouse clicks or ask his secretary for Karl Benson's phone number and give it to him. When the heck has yBu ever stuck its neck out for us??? for the past 20 years they've stabbed us in the back. Why does this not surprise me what happened. I agree with other poster's on here, our future does not look bright at all, maybe if your are off in fantasy land we have a great future. We need an administration that looks out for the school First! not those fetchin' zoobies. Come on ... seriously I hope the board of regents decisions are all made public, and they all answer for their actions. We can never trust other programs to follow through on their commitments. How come there aren't more ticked off Aggies out there? This letter does not fix what happened.

the football team should move down to FCS and then play against weber state, SUU, Idaho State and the like.

Duke: I agree with you, the Aggies earned points by keeping their word. But that will soon be forgotten next year when the WAC either doesn't exist, or is so pathetic it doesn't matter. The ONLY option for the Aggies at this point, is to figure out how to get into the MWC. It's hard for Aggie fans to get excited for a schedule where the biggest games are Idaho, San Jose and New Mexico St

I cant believe this. You gotta strike when the iron is hot. I am sick. If we go to FCS because of this, heads will roll.

IF we fall to FCS status Albrecht should be fired, there are no two ways about it. Now that being said, I'm glad they kept their word, and I can't believe ESPN is just going to sit by idly and watch their TV money maker in college football out west to die. ABC/ESPN/Disney has a ton more money to offer than the MTN. panzy network via comcast. I don't know why, but how does any of this feel right, I mean this isn't done. I don't see us just sitting there and being demoted to division AA. They should have done what Benson said .. 20 mil buyout. Who knows this new conference ESPN is helping form, let's see what they can conjure up. I hope either way Craig Thompson, the evil mobster of College athletics, gets his due a lame a s s mwc.

I am so glad we did the right thing and stuck with our word. I am a bigger Aggie fan today than I was yesterday. Good Job Albrecht and Barnes.

You can't blame the Aggies for keeping their word. But as the WAC deteriorates, is there still a chance the Aggies can work their way into the Mountain West?

What should USU have done differently? We stuck to our word... I can live with that.

May be the worst day in the history of Aggie sports. USU basically turned down the MWC to drop down to FCS and the Big Sky Conference when the WAC dies in 2012.
