USU programs combine to create first Access and Diversity Center

By Cache Valley Daily

Five Utah State University programs have combined to create the new Access and Diversity Center. USU is the first institution of higher education in the state to deliver services to diverse student populations in this uniquely collaborative way.

A grand opening to celebrate the new collaboration is scheduled for Wednesday September 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Taggart Student Center Room 315. The pubic is invited.

The new organization will bring together Multicultural Student Services, Gay, Lesbian,Bisexual,Transgender and Ally services, Veterans services, non-traditional student services and Educational Outreach. Michelle Bogdan is the director of the new Access and Diversity Center. She says the center's staff will be cross trained

As one who has lived among the communities that Dave is referring to, please allow me to say, he is correct. Yes his post was poorly worded, however, the intent is very accurate. The truly sad aspect, is that organizations such as this do not promote equality, rather, they provide a united front of hate. It does not matter what groups are involved, and it doesn't matter what group they feel singled out from. The sad truth, is that this group will end up being used to slap at or promote superiority. Psychological studies in behavior have shown that unless you "part of" the correct group - you are ignored and left to fend for yourself (ie: -the bystander studies) Allow me to reiterate. Groups such as these do don't promote equality, they end up preaching a reversal - the Popular become the unpopular, etc. It may not be their intent - but the definition of Insanity is to repeat the same action over and over, but expect a different outcome.

I find it not only appalling but also very sad that the university would allow such a program to exist. First, because they have taken individual empowering programs, something mind you that took decades to even make that happen, and have thrown all of the “minority” programs into one?? That if nothing else is very degrading, not empowering. Second, this is a very political move on the schools part. I find it sad that they continue to use these students as obstacles rather than people they can lump together. If this were to happen outside of the school, in society it would be a very big “racial/discriminating” thing. Sad, shame on you USU!

Dave, Learn to speak English if you want to be taken seriously. Oh, and say something that makes sense.

Not one you the university professors have ever lived in a totally diverse community. They always pontificate from their perches with little practical experience. Go to Oakland, Richmond, LA, etc. and you'll never find these professors living amongst the populace, they always sequester themselves away from the local divisions! It sounds good and makes them feel superior but in reality they do not practice what they preach, if they did they'd be robbed, burglarized, molested, beaten, etc
