Safety along 100 South a major topic of discussion at Logan Municipal Council meeting

Everyone participating at a Logan City Council meeting Tuesday night agreed that “keeping kids safe” is the main consideration when it comes to deciding what to do to make 100 South safe.

Major new construction will be done at Logan High School in the coming years as it undergoes a major expansion, which will result in much more traffic and other activity. Some school officials would prefer to have 100 South closed as part of the expansion but that is not likely to happen.

Logan Public Works Director Mark Nielsen said the city has vacated streets in the past and then wished later they would have kept them open. Nielsen said the issue has been studied thoroughly with safety as the number one concern.

“Our preferred option would be to work with the school district to leave the road open,” Nielsen said, “put in a mid-block crossing and improve that crossing, improve flashing caution lights, whatever we need to do to make it as safe as we can but keep the road open.”

Nielsen said there are many different issues to consider such as student drop-offs. Several people thought it might work well to keep the street closed at certain times of day. School officials and city workers agreed to work together to come up with the best solution possible.
