Outgoing Clarkston mayor thinks a new landfill would be obsolete

Clarkston Mayor Kendon Godfrey is not running for a second four-year term this year and neither are the two council members whose terms are expiring: Craig Hidalgo and Dan Cooper. Mayor Godfrey said on KVNU’s Crosstalk program Wednesday that Clarkston is a great community but many are concerned about the plan to build a new county landfill in that area.

Godfrey said there are many reasons not to put the landfill at that location and others wonder if it should be built at all.

“I think it’s just obsolete. I think there’s better ways to do it,” Godfrey said. “Instead of digging a hole and filling it up with garbage, there’s incineration, all types of recycling that we can use now that is green, more friendly to mother earth.”

The mayor said it is not too late to stop the project and it would save taxpayers a great deal of money. He hopes the people eventually elected to lead the city will continue those efforts.
