Police encouraging residents to register bicycles

LOGAN — With the summer months coming up, the Logan City Police Department is asking residents to register their bicycles in case they are ever lost or stolen.

The number of bike thefts increase during the summer and police Lt. Rod Peterson said if people take the time to register their bikes, the chance of having them returned increases.

“We have about 230 bicycle thefts or found bicycles every year,” said Peterson. “If people would register those bikes that we end up recovering, then we could promptly get those bikes back to the registered owners.”

The police department recovers a lot of bikes each year but in many cases they aren’t registered, so officers can’t track down who the owners are.

Peterson said registering a bicycle only takes a few minutes and can be done at the Logan City Police Department.

“Just walk into the front door and tell them that you are there to register your bike,” said Peterson. “Have the bicycle preferably there, so we can get the serial number or you can just bring the serial number of the bike with you. While supplies last we’ll give you a free helmet for registering.”

There is no cost and once police have the bike’s serial number, it can be returned to the owner if it’s ever found or recovered.

Peterson said as more people are riding their bikes during the summer months, it is important to lock them up anytime you are not riding them.

“Don’t leave it unattended in your front yard,” said Peterson. “Seems like that is a spot where a lot of them are stolen. Another popular area where bikes are stolen is when they are secured to a bike rack on the back of a vehicle, left in a parking lot, while the owner is getting dinner, going shopping or doing whatever.”

Peterson said registration can be done during regular business hours at 62 West 300 North.
