Nibley man sentenced to jail for stabbing co-worker

LOGAN — A 41-year-old Nibley man, convicted of stabbing a co-worker during a fight last summer, has been sentenced to jail. Jose M. Carillo was ordered to spend 60-days behind bars.

Judge Thomas Willmore said he couldn’t understand what would cause Carillo to stab the victim six-times with a box cutter. He told the defendant, there was obviously something wrong with him.

On August 22, Cache County Sheriff’s deputies were called to Logan Coach on report of the stabbing. They found the dispute began when the two employees started arguing. The altercation turned physical when Carillo grabbed a box cutter and slashed the victim multiple times.

The victim was transported to Logan Regional Hospital and recovered. Carillo was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, a third-degree felony.

In February, the defendant pleaded guilty under the condition that state attorneys would ask the court to sentence him to jail instead of prison.

During Monday’s sentencing in 1st District Court, prosecutor Spencer Walsh said they agreed to the plea bargain after evidence showed the fight may have been started from a racial slur.

Carrillo told the court he was so physically weak at the time of the fight, he couldn’t remember the stabbing.

Judge Willmore ordered Carrillo to successfully complete anger management therapy while incarcerated.
