USU announces record breaking year for research grants

This is the day Utah State University announces a record breaking year for research grants and demonstration of research. Mark McClellan, president of research and dean of the school of graduate studies at Utah State University will announce that it has received more than $220 million in sponsored research during fiscal year 2014, more than any other year in USU’s history.

To illustrate the types of research being conducted at USU, McClellan’s announcement will be followed with a presentation by Victor Lee, assistant professor of the Emma Eccles Jones College of Education and Human Services on his research using fitness sensors fit bands and other recording technologies with elementary school children to be more successful in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Following Lee’s presentation Michael LeFevre, professor and scientific director for the Center for Human Nutrition Studies, College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences will give a presentation in USU’s Genomics Core Laboratory on his research relating to the effect of polyphenols on intestinal bacteria.

Research this year included investigating auditing standards in the national banking industry, surveying farmland owners to assess changing demographics in agriculture and potential bio-terrorism viruses, assessing the needs of at-risk students with the goal of increasing high school graduation rates, developing strategies to counteract fat intake and address the nation’s epidemic, developing new methods to reduce deadly wildlife-vehicle collisions on Utah’s roads.
