It’s called the Cache Valley Toys for Tots Golf Classic, and it will be held August 6 at the Birch Creek Golf Club in Smithfield. The event is hosted by the Marine Corps League of Cache  Valley. While it is the fifth year the league has been helping to raise money for Toys for Tots, it is the first time the group has hosted a golf tournament.

Carlton Brown, event coordinator and one of the league’s founders, said the tournament is a fundraiser for Toys for Tots and the Marine Corps League hopes to raise $10,000 with the event.

Those who enter the four player Scramble 9 and Out tournament will be helping anywhere between 800-1100 children to have a brighter Christmas.

“The toys are dropped into a donation box at businesses. Each week volunteers and myself go around to those businesses and collect those,” explained Brown. “They are taken to a warehouse and put on a shelf.

“The UPC code is eradicated so the toys can not be turned back in for toys once they’re issued out. They are put on a shelf by age and gender. Once the applications are in we’ll bring volunteers in to bag up the toys for each family.”

Brown said he is grateful for the help his group gets from local businesses, especially Sam’s Club where he is employed.

“Sam’s Club will be a co-sponsor on this golf tournament,” Brown said. “They are actually going to provide the continental breakfast the morning of the golf tournament and they’ll do the lunch.

“Sam’s Club will have volunteers at the golf club to help get their bags out of their vehicles, get them registered and get them off to the tournament.”

And he said Sam’s Club has done a great deal to help get the warehouse in good shape to store the toys as they are collected.

Brown said the 9 and Out golf tournament will start at 8 a.m. and there is an insurance policy on hole #3 because anyone who gets a hole in one on it will receive $10,000.
