North Logan woman killed in murder suicide attempt

LOGAN — A woman was killed and another man is in critical condition in what appears to be a murder and failed attempted suicide, Saturday night in North Logan.

North Park Police Chief Kim Hawkes said Amanda Lee Hoyt of North Logan was found dead in a white Subaru that had crashed near 1830 East Canyon Ridge Drive.

Hoyt was a passenger in the car and reportedly had multiple gunshot wounds, including at least one to her head.

Hawkes said the driver of the Subaru was Christian A. Emerson of Smithfield.  Officers found he had also been shot and was unconscious.  He was transported by ambulance to the Cache Valley Hospital and later airlifted to a Salt Lake Area hospital.  He is currently in critical condition.

Officers first responded to the scene, on report of a single vehicle accident.  The Subaru was found stopped on a park strip and sidewalk, in front of a home with the engine still running.

Investigators found a gun inside the vehicle.  They believe Emerson shot Hoyt and then shot himself.

Hawks said investigators determined Hoyt’s death and Emerson’s injuries were not a result of the vehicle crash.  This case is still under investigation.
