Remembering the roots of USU during CAAS Week

CAAS Week at Utah State University kicked off Monday and continues until Friday. CAAS is an abbreviation for College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences and the theme for the week is “Back to Our Roots” noting the university’s founding and history as an agricultural college and state agricultural experiment station.

Even though USU now offers a myriad of programs and has changed focus over the years, Heather Lieber, CAAS Academic Senator, said it’s good for Aggie students to remember their schools’ foundation.

“Definitely, countless programs that people can join here at Utah State but we’re bringing cows on campus, we’re bringing all these sorts of animals. This is the first time any of these students have even seen these animals in person.

“Being able to touch them and giving people, even those who experience it for the first time, in a small way, is bringing back the roots of us as an agricultural college. So it’s been really cool to see and we’re happy to be a part of helping people remember that, for sure,” she said.

Lieber was on KVNU’s For the People program on Tuesday. Some of the activities still on tap include: a film screening on Food Evolution, a documentary on the controversy over GMO’s. That will be shown Wednesday night in the TSC Auditorium at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, the USU Farmer’s Market takes place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the northeast part of the Quad. On Friday, the famous Tractor Parade at 10:20 a.m. proceeds down Aggie Bull-evard (700 North) and Country Swing Night from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on the Quad.
