UPDATE: Deputies believe Garden City couple shot and killed gunman in self-defense

Deputies believe a man killed in Garden City Sunday afternoon died after being shot by an elderly couple, who were defending themselves. Investigators still have not released the identities of the two men and one woman involved.

A press release from the Rich County Sheriff’s Office said, when deputies responded to the Sweet Water Trailer Park they found the deceased man inside a truck. The vehicle had crashed into the side of a trailer home.

Inside the home deputies found a 72-year-old man and 62-year-old woman. Both had been shot in the abdomen distantly from a shotgun. They were transported by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital.

The press release said both victims have non-life threatening injuries and are expected to survive.

Deputies believe during the attack, the elderly couple exchanged gunfire with the gunman, killing him. A preliminary investigation shows the couple shot back at the suspect as a manner of self-defense.

Investigators are still determining why the suspect was targeting the couple.

Deputies were originally called to the trailer home at 3079 Breaker Drive on reports of a suicidal man who was shooting into a home.

Seven agents with the Department of Public Safety’s State Bureau of Investigation, three Utah Highway Patrol Troopers and a forensic scientist with the state crime lab are assisting deputies in the joint investigation.
