Logan City Police: opportunity crimes increase with warmer temperatures

Criminals may not like to be out in cold weather. At any rate, Logan Police Chief Gary Jensen is saying that crimes seem to increase when the temperature warms up.

On KVNU’s Crosstalk program, he said that is especially the case with so-called opportunity crimes.

“Simply leaving your vehicle unlocked is an opportunity,” Jensen said. “Most of these folks that are out doing automobile burglaries are looking for the opportune moment to open your door, rifle through your car, take your property and leave, rather than breaking windows or those types of things.

“So crimes of opportunity is something that the public can really help us with.”

The police chief said obviously criminals are looking for things that can be sold and those that can be turned into cash quickly. He encouraged people to call about anything they see of a suspicious nature.
