LOGAN – The last meeting of the year for the Logan Municipal Council has been held but one more is coming up for the Cache County Council. Council Chairman Greg Merrill said the last meeting of the year, which is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 12 at 5 p.m., is traditionally used for finalizing the budget for the coming year. It is expected to be the major issue Tuesday night.
Merrill said council members have held many meetings and budget workshops in recent months in an attempt to come up with the best budget. Even so, he said there will likely be a small property tax increase of two percent.
“We are probably going to approve that budget for 2018 which includes the tax increase,” he said. “For a typical home of about $230,000 to $240,000 it’ll mean somewhere around $4.75 increase to the taxpayer for the year. Not on a monthly basis, but for the year.”
Merrill said the county gets its revenue from just two forms of taxes – sales tax and property tax. He said it’s been interesting at budget hearings to hear the same people that often don’t want a tax increase want to have something happen to improve their own neighborhood.
