Sen. Hillyard and local justice court judges recognized for their service

A local lawmaker and two local justice court judges in Northern Utah were recently recognized as being among the best in the state.

On April 12, during a meeting of the Justice Court Judges in St. George, Senator Lyle Hillyard, R-Logan, was presented with the 2013 Amicus Curiae award. The Amicus Curiae Award, or friend of the court award, was presented to Sen. Hillyard for his outstanding service to Utah justice courts, judges, and staff.

According to the Utah State Courts Facebook page, Sen. Hillyard was not the only one recognized at the St. George event. Two other local justice court judges were honored as well.

Logan Justice Court Judge David Marx was presented with the 2013 Justice Court Judge of the Year award. Judge Marx was recognized for his outstanding efforts on behalf of justice courts in Utah and for furthering the professional and legal competence of Utah Justice Court judges.

The 2013 Justice Court Service award was presented to Judge Wayne Cooper in recognition of his outstanding commitment to fellow judges and to the Utah judiciary. Judge Cooper serves the justice courts in Clarkston, Cornish City, and Trenton City.

Utah’s justice courts are established by municipalities and counties. These courts have the authority to handle class B and C misdemeanors, violations of ordinances, small claims, and infractions committed within their territorial jurisdiction. The Justice Court awards are determined by the Association and Board of Justice Court judges.
