Recommendation for new high school in North Logan is Green Canyon Wolves

Ridgeline High School in Millville will officially open its doors to its student body this August. In 2017 the new high school in North Logan will open. The principal for that new school, Dave Swenson, says on Thursday night the school’s name, mascot and colors were revealed at a Cache County School Board working meeting.

“The new name of the school is Green Canyon High School,” says Swenson. “The mascot being the Wolves, and the colors being forest green and silver with black and white as accent colors.”

The Green Canyon Wolves is just a recommendation at this point. The school board will meet Thursday, January 21st in a public meeting to officially decide whether or not to approve the name, mascot and colors.

At times, some schools will consider aligning their school mascots and color schemes with professional sports teams so students and families can readily find matching color combinations. For example, Ridgeline High School in Millville did this and adopted a color scheme similar to the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks.

“We didn’t talk about professional sports teams or anything like that,” says Swenson, “more of just a good, solid color. I do have to say when we were talking about green and silver the Philadelphia Eagles did come up, but we didn’t want to go that grayish of a green.”

Swenson says the committee of parents and community members took a lot of different things into consideration, including their own experiences with Sky View High School.

“Obviously if Green Canyon was going to be the name you would want green in there,” Swenson says. “We wanted a color that could be easily reproduced. At Sky View we have this Columbia Blue and it is hard to match from one company to another.

“In getting feedback from coaches too we wanted a solid color. Forest Green pretty much stays consistent. There might be a little bit of a shade difference but not like we’ve experienced at Sky View.”

Swenson says the committee of 19 people, representing the communities that will supply the school with students (Hyde Park, North Logan, Benson, Amalga, Newton and Clarkston), came together to refine the dozens of responses for school names, colors and mascots after several rounds of public surveys.

Additionally, that committee received feedback from over 1500 students and nearly 1100 community members before finally settling on the Green Canyon Wolves recommendation. Green Canyon and Wolves were consistently the most popular recommendations.

Other school name recommendations included Timber, Bridger or Bridgerland and North Peak. Other mascots under consideration included Trappers, Rams and Guardians.

Swenson says the committee also looked at other schools throughout the state to examine other mascots and color combinations to ensure there wouldn’t be any duplicates.

As far as the construction progress of the new school, Swenson says it is over three months ahead of schedule.

“That’s why they wanted the name and colors, mostly the colors,” he explains. “The architects want to start putting the color schemes together and everything. They’ve got the gymnasium already enclosed and are ready to start putting some heat in there. They are ready to start painting so that’s why they want the colors.”

He says the fall weather was favorable and the construction and architectural crews learned a lot from their work on Ridgeline High School.

Everyone on that committee took interest, North Logan seems excited and they have talked about the possibility of renaming the road that goes in front of the school on 200 East after the school mascot.

“These two new high schools are going to change the valley in a lot of ways! Traditions and people will be different,” Swenson says, “but it will be exciting for smaller schools and more opportunities for more kids to be involved. I hope all these schools will be beacons for their communities.”
