LOGAN – It is referred to as the “order of magnitude estimate” for the new Logan City Library. It was outlined at Tuesday’s meeting of the Logan City Council meeting by architect Ken Craven.

Mayor Holly Daines said the estimate was based on the current library construction projects and recent construction experience.

“The numbers we had heard back in December were considerably higher, more like $15 million,” Daines said before the meeting. “That was a little bit scary because it was more than we had anticipated.

“These numbers, which are more in the $10-$12 million range, are more doable. We have identified probably about $9 million in funds we could put toward the project. We hope to find a way to make up the difference.”

The cost estimates revealed in the council meeting were from $10.2 million to $11.8 million.

Library director Karen Clark addressed the council meeting with information she and her staff had been researching. She said since the last meeting, she and her workers have been determining just what the needs would be for a 21st Century library that “looks like Logan.”

She said people need to know just how important a library is, how welcoming it can appear and how it has become the technological place for many people.

“We are requesting instead of an 18 seat a 10 seat creation space media lab for creating and sharing new ideas,” said Clark. “This is something that our community has with Cache Makers but we would like to make it available to all members of our community.

“Also, smaller study rooms; we don’t have any in our library that are small. So (we need) just some small four-person study rooms and four two-person study rooms.”

Clark said it was decided that an auditorium in the new library was necessary right away, but hopefully someone may decide to donate money toward one later.

Mayor Daines said she will soon be meeting with members of the council who are actually the ones who will be making the ultimate decision.
