Nationwide cancer study recruiting Cache Valley residents

What if you could prevent even one family from hearing the words, “you have cancer”? American Cancer Society’s Director of Corporate and System Initiatives Lex Olsen said Cache Valley residents can do just that by participating in a study that aims at ending cancer. Cancer Prevention Study-3, or CPS-3, is a nationwide cancer study that is the largest independent study of its kind.

“We’re looking to recruit over 300,000 people nationwide to participate in this study,” said Olsen. “In Utah, we’re looking for 2,000 more people to participate to add up to that 300,000. In Cache Valley, we’d like to see 500 people participate.”

Enrollment is free and will occur at several different locations throughout Cache Valley from September 24th to the 28th. While at your 30 minute appointment, Olsen said you will be asked to sign a consent form, complete a brief survey, provide a waist circumference measurement, and give a blood sample. In order to participate in the study, you must make a long-term commitment to be involved for the next 10 to 20 years, be between the ages of 30 and 65, and not have a personal history with cancer (this does not include basal or squamous cell cancer). After enrollment, participants will be expected to complete periodic follow-up surveys.

“People want to know if these studies have helped out in the fight against cancer,” said Olsen. “The answer is absolutely.”

He then explained that CPS-1 was first started in the 1950s, and it was discovered that cigarette smoke and secondhand smoke could cause lung cancer. This led to the U.S. Surgeon General’s report, warning labels on cigarettes and numerous smoke-free legislations.

“The ultimate goal of Cancer Prevention Study-3 is to end cancer as we know it. We will identify what causes cancer, what prevents cancer, and ultimately end this as a threat,” Olsen said.

Olsen stressed the importance of early enrollment for those interested in being involved with CPS-3. “If we don’t have early enrollment numbers, then we won’t be able to contact as many phlebotomists to be there.”
