Toddler accidently shot in Young Ward

LOGAN — A two-year-old boy from Young Ward was transported to Logan Regional Hospital after being shot Friday night.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Peterson said the toddler’s family called 911 at 6:40 p.m., reporting the boy had been shot in the stomach with a .22 caliber rifle.

“We believe that it was a three-year-old sister that gained access to the weapon,” said Peterson. “It’s still unclear to us where the weapon came into play but all the evidence is pointing toward the three-year-sibling had the weapon and fired the shot that hit the two-year-old brother.”

The family began performing CPR while deputies and paramedics drove to the home near 3616 West 2200 South, Young Ward.

First paramedics to arrive at the home reported the boy was unresponsive, breathing but turning blue.

Peterson said deputies and medical crews recognized the urgency of the injury and a Life Flight helicopter was also paged.

The toddler was transported by ambulance, on a ventilator, to Logan Regional Hospital where he underwent surgery to try and stabilize his injuries.

Peterson said doctors then planned to transport the toddler by helicopter to Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City.

Peterson said investigators believe the rifle belonged to the family’s father and that the shooting was accidental.

“There is nothing suspicious as far as the weapon itself goes other than the three-year-old was able to get access to it,” said Peterson. “We don’t know the details on that yet. That is something that we will determine as we follow up on the case and bring it to closure.”

No charges have been filed.
