Police working with businesses to curb shoplifting

LOGAN — It may be considered “petty,” but shoplifting is one of the most reported crimes and Logan City Police are working with local retailers to try and reduce those numbers.

Tuesday afternoon Logan City Police Chief Gary Jensen and Lt. Rod Peterson met with store managers to discuss trends, contributing factors and strategies for reducing shoplifting cases.

Peterson said shoplifting is the fourth most reported crime in the city, with 110 arrests last year and already 125 this year.

Jensen said if previous trends hold, they expect to see those numbers increase during the next couple weeks. The main reason is the return of Utah State students for fall semester and families needing back-to-school clothes and supplies.

Retailers said they are seeing more cases of counterfeiting, where customers are trying to pass fake receipts and barcodes to return merchandise for cash or purchase an item for a cheaper price.

Jensen said he has asked his officers to increase their number of patrols they make through stores. The department has also recently launched a Facebook page and is creating an email list that retailers can use to share information about shoplifting suspects.
