Crews called to rescue injured hiker

LOGAN — Cache County Search and Rescue crews and a medical helicopter were called to rescue a man who fell while hiking Sunday morning.

Sheriff’s Lt. Brian Lock said Douglas Gilpin and Tyler Nyberg were hiking near Cherry Peak Resort, east of Richmond. Around 11:00 a.m., Gilpin reportedly slipped and fell 50-feet off a cliff, hitting his head.

Nyberg was able to report the accident to county dispatch. Because of the remote area, Search and Rescue crews along with a Life Flight helicopter were paged to the accident.

Lock said rescuers were able to reach Gilpin, who was conscious and breathing. They used the helicopter’s hoist to pull him off the mountain and transport him to McKay Dee Hospital. His injuries were reportedly non-life threatening.
