Plea deal possibly coming for second teenager charged in Deserae Turner shooting

Attorney Shannon Demler represents 16-year-old Jayzon Decker, whose case was recently moved into the adult court system in front of Judge Brian Cannell. Decker has been charged in connection with the shooting of Deserae Turner.

LOGAN — A possible plea agreement may be coming for Jayzon Decker, the alleged co-conspirator in the shooting of Deserae Turner. The 16-year-old Hyde Park teenager has been given one week to accept a prosecutor’s offer or proceed to trial.

Decker appeared in 1st District Court Tuesday morning. He is charged with attempted aggravated murder and attempted robbery, both first-degree felonies, and four charges of obstructing justice, a second-degree felony.

Prosecutors claim Decker and 17-year-old Colter Peterson concocted a plan to kill Turner while playing video games and discussing their desire to “get rid” of her. She was found with a gunshot wound to the head early in the morning of February 17. She had reportedly been left to die in a dry canal east of Sky View High School.

During Tuesday’s hearing, Judge Brian Cannell said attorneys for both sides told him they are working on a possible plea deal. The details of the resolution were not discussed.

Defense attorney Shannon Demler said Decker hasn’t accepted the plea deal yet. He asked the court for another week so his client could make a final decision.

State attorney Spencer Walsh told the court they were okay with giving Decker one more week. He explained the negotiated settlement offer will expire then if the defendant doesn’t accept it.

Judge Cannell ordered Decker to appear again in court December 19. The teenager remains in the Cache Valley Youth Center, being held without bail.

In October, Peterson accepted a plea deal, pleading guilty to attempted aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, and robbery, a second-degree felony. As part of the agreement, Peterson agreed to testify in Decker’s case if it went to trial. He’s waiting to be sentenced, pending Decker’s charges.
