Winners of 2017 Young Artist Cup announced

Winners of the 18th annual Young Artist Cup were awarded trophies, cash scholarships and other prizes on Thursday and Friday evenings, reflecting countless hours of practice and years of dedication to the development of their musical and artistic talents. The competition took place at Mountain Crest High School, featuring performers in grades 10-12 who live within the boundaries of Mountain Crest and Ridgeline high schools.

The Young Artist Cup was founded in 2000 by George and Julie Whitney, residents of College Ward who established the annual contest to celebrate and share the accomplishments of student musicians. Blair Powell, vice principal at Mountain Crest High School, said the event creates a great opportunity to recognize participants’ achievements.

“I think the best thing is the exposure they get, the opportunity they have to perform for a larger audience,” he said. “They’ve worked so hard, and they have so much talent. It’s just so nice to be able to individually showcase them and their talent and their hard work.”

Jacki Andrus, a senior at Mountain Crest, won first place in Friday’s brass/wind/percussion division. She also earned the evening’s Audience Choice Award.

“I was musical in high school, but I am nothing compared to her,” said Andrus’ mother, Tani Andrus. “It’s like living my dream all over again watching her perform, and she really has just totally blown me away in the skills she has and just her excitement and love for music.”

Allison Cook, a sophomore at Mountain Crest, won the brass/wind/percussion category’s second place award. The Young Artist Cup marked her first such performance.

“I felt really good about it,” she said. “I played it exactly how I wanted it to be. I was nervous that I would trip and fall as I was going up on the stage, but I was okay. It’s okay now!”

Allison, a flutist, played “Carnaval de Venice” by Genin. The accompaniment track she used was arranged by her sister, who is currently living in London.

“My sister composed the track and then sent it to me, so it was kind of like I was playing with my sister,” Cook said. “It was cool.”

The Young Artist Cup includes five categories of musical performance, along with a logo contest. Winners of the 2017 competition are as follows:
