LOGAN - Utah State University alumnus and Logan High graduate Lars Peter Hansen is a co-winner of the 2013 Nobel Prize in economics. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the three winners, all Americans, in Stockholm on Monday morning. Hansen shared the 2013 Nobel Prize along with Eugene F. Fama and Robert J. Shiller for their research on how bond, stock and house prices change over time.

Hansen graduated from Logan High School in 1970. He then attended USU and graduated in 1974 with a bachelor’s in mathematics and political science. Hansen continued his education at University of Minnesota, where he earned a doctorate in economics in 1978. He started his career working as an assistant professor at Carnegie-Mellon and later went on to teach at University of Chicago. He has been a part of the economics faculty at University of Chicago since 1981.

The three economists will share the $1.2 million prize.

Logan High School and Utah State Alumni both recognized Hansen’s achievements on their twitter feeds Monday morning.

Utah State Alumni: “Congrats to USU alumnus, Lars Peter Hansen, for co-winning the 2013 Nobel Prize in Economics.”

Grizz Principal: “Congratulations to #LHS grad (1970) Lars Peter Hansen for winning the Nobel Prize in Economics! Who will be the next Nobel winner from LHS?”

Hansen’s father, Dr. R. Gaurth Hansen, was a Professor of Biochemistry and Provost of USU. Hansen is married and has one son.
