LOGAN — Cache County Search and Rescue crews were called out Thursday night to find two snowmobilers who became separated, while riding near the peak of Mt. Logan.

One of the 18-year-olds was able to call 911 on a cell phone. He told dispatch operators that snow and fog caused the two of them to become disoriented.

Cache County Sheriff’s Lt. Brian Locke said four search teams traveled up Providence and Right Hand Fork Canyons in snowcats and snowmobiles to reach them.

“Between nine and 10 o’clock last night we were able to locate one of the snowmobilers and they were able to tell us where his partner was at,” said Locke. “A short time later we located the second snowmobiler.”

Searchers reported finding the two above Providence Canyon. Both were in pretty good shape, cold and ready to go home.

Locke said it took around three hours for searchers to find the men after 911 dispatch operators had tried to ping their cell phone to get an exact location.

“That was kind of bouncing off some of the other cell phone towers so that was kind of causing some directional problems for us, but we were able to get it into a general area.”

Neither of the two men required any medical attention.

Locke said Thursday night’s rescue is a good reminder for anyone going into the back country.

“Make sure you are familiar with the area you are going into. Let somebody know where you are going to be at, and when you are going to be out. Have the appropriate equipment for what you are doing. Check for avalanche dangers and postings. Have beacons and safety equipment, and just be really careful.”

The Utah Avalanche Center reports moderate to considerable avalanche conditions right now, after recent snow storms.
