Pyfer hopes Common Core forum helped change minds

Utah State School Board Chair Tami Pyfer is hoping Monday’s forum helped change at least some minds on the issue of Common Core standards. On KVNU’s Crosstalk program Tuesday, Pyfer said a lot of people against the standards don’t actually understand they are only “expectations” meant to help students achieve.

She said most legislators, including those from Cache County, are supportive.

“Once the legislators took time to review these and look at the role of the state board, which is required in setting standards, (they saw) that we have complete control over these standards,” Pyfer said. “We’ve already added to these Common Core standards in cursive writing.

“There were some concerns that we were going to lose cursive writing. We had never had that standard in the past but because of parent concern we added the standard of cursive writing.”

Pyfer said some parents would like to see mathematics included and that issue will be explored at the next school board meeting.
