CAPSA teaming up with Sheriff’s Office for new Lethality Assessment Program

LOGAN – The Citizens against Physical and Sexual Abuse program (CAPSA) has been helping victims of abuse in Cache Valley for 30 years. The program is now partnering with the Cache County Sheriff’s Office for a new Lethality Assessment Program.

Jill Anderson has been leading CAPSA for the last 20 of those 30 years. She said domestic abuse can be physical, mental or emotional. At its worst it involves death, which is something the new program hopes to prevent.

“How that works is when law enforcement responds to a domestic violence call they will complete an 11-question lethality assessment with a victim,” Anderson said. “If they can see from that assessment that they are in high danger, they’ll let the victim know that and give us a call immediately so that we can connect immediately with the victim and let them know (their) resources and help them safety plan right then.”

Anderson said the program has been used with Sheriff’s Department and feels it has brought victims into shelter who otherwise would have not realized the danger they were in. She said it can give hope to survivors and help them build a life for themselves and their families.
