LOGAN — Entertainer Michael Ballam was arrested and booked into the Cache County Jail Friday.  The founder and director of the Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre, was jailed by the Logan City Police Department after being pulled over.

According to Assistant Chief Jeff Curtis, police officers pulled over Ballam for a minor traffic violation Friday afternoon.  When officers checked his driver’s license information, they found a warrant had been issued for his arrest, after he had failed to resolve a minor traffic violation from a month ago.

Curtis said because of the warrant, officers took Ballam into custody and booked him into the Cache County Jail.

According to Cache County records, Ballam was booked into jail at 3:56 P.M., Friday.  No bail was set.  Curtis said he did not know how long Ballam spent in jail before being released.

Friday morning, Ballam was a guest on KVNU’s Crosstalk show and spoke about his excitement for this year’s Utah Festival Opera schedule.  Among the performances, Ballam is starring in the musical "Fiddler On The Roof," that begins July 13th.

I'm tired of people saying Ballam ended up in jail for not paying a fine. That's not right. He ended up in jail because he failed to appear in the court(s) as ordered. In doing so he showed contempt for our system of law. How hard is it for a grown man to show up at a court appearance- particularly for something HE consideres minor.

He got pulled over for this "small" infraction TWICE. I question wheher he had insurance to begin with. I've had many busy days as I too have spent most of my life in the arts yet I have never failed to get that little card from my house to my car. In fact, I usually watch for it like a hawk. I've also never driven without said little card. It's not a trivial matter; what if Ballam had caused an accident? I'm tired of people not taking responsibility for their actions. How many members of the LDS Church go on and return from couples' missions every year? I'm sure they get their insurance matters resolved before getting in a few thousand pounds of metal and moving around the city in it; it's just one of those things responsible adults do.

But again, the issue here is the contempt he showed for our rules of law and our courts. It's not a trivial, tounge in cheek matter. He should, in fact, he horribly humiliated at his actions- not thinking it's great research for his upcoming roll in Les Miserable. Perhaps if he'd show as much respect for our rules and the laws that govern our society as he does for researching a role his actions in public would be more palatable. I don't often back the Herald Journal, but in this case, front page coverage was appropriate.

So Michael Ballam is on the Herald Journal front page today, explaining why he ended up in jail. He well understands why he is news-worthy--calls himself a lightning rod. Such an ego! But we who report his small indiscretion so vividly, allow, even promote his feelings of entitlement. As I said before, this is small-mindedness, and I'm saying it articulately, your mom.

You may want to learn to spell and form a sentence before you slam people. Cause you kinda sound stupid.

Sooo...do you report everyone who is booked into jail for not paying a traffic ticket? I think now. You've just shown through your small-mindedness that it does matter who you are.
