LOGAN – Heavy snow in northern Utah Saturday restricted travel through Sardine Canyon, SR 89/91 and Logan Canyon, SR 89.

Utah Highway Patrol reported multiple slide-offs and accidents in both canyons, prompting officials to restrict travel to vehicles with four-wheel drive and snow tires.

Logan City dispatch reported difficulty notifying motorists because of a malfunctioning UDOT sign at the mouth of Sardine Canyon in Wellsville.

Travel restrictions remained in effect through the afternoon.

Snow is also believed to be the cause of a four-vehicle-accident that occurred near 7700 North SR 91, between Smithfield and Richmond. Police reported the that two accidents happened simultaneously, blocking traffic and sending five people to the hospital.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the area until 9 p.m. Snow is expected through Saturday night.
