Letter carriers want to stamp out hunger this Saturday

If it’s the second Saturday in May, it is time for the nation’s largest one-day effort to combat hunger.

On Saturday, letter carriers from across the country will take part in the annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive as they collect food items while delivering the mail. On KVNU’s Crosstalk program Wednesday, Logan Letter Carrier President Aaron Porter encouraged everyone to be part of the effort.

He said all people have to do Saturday morning is put the food they are willing to donate into a bag and leave it next to their mail box.

“I’m amazed at how the Post Office is able to handle the amount of volume that we do handle in just one day,” Porter said. “Last year we collected 26,000 pounds of food. We, through the efficient network of the postal service, were able to get all that food gathered together in one place, which was the Logan Post Office.

Porter explained that after all the food was gathered up, the letter carriers got some help in finally delivering all the donations to the Cache Community Food Pantry.

“We loaded it up on a trailer provided by L.W. Miller’s, and they have been doing that for years for us. We are greatly appreciative. They then take it over to the food pantry.”

Porter said in order to deliver the mail and collect all the food letter carriers often get some help from their families.
