Brigham City experiencing positive economic growth

Groundbreaking for Utah State University’s new regional campus in Brigham City is scheduled for October 9 and the city’s Economic Director, Paul Larsen, said he expects new commercial projects to come in, spurred by the new school.

On KVNU’s For the People program Monday, Larsen said there is a lot of growth in retail and other development after years of concern about high unemployment that followed the end of the space shuttle program at ATK, along with the recession.

Larsen said Brigham City has cooperated with USU in moving the new school forward.

“Further north on Main Street we have a couple of commercial structures that are either just-barely finished and beginning to be occupied or under construction,” Larsen said. “In downtown area we have a number of businesses that are going through facade grant programs and upgrading their buildings and improving the looks of those. We also have a Hampton Inn hotel that will probably be opening in November.”

Larsen said the final phase is underway for a historic dance building which will eventually be used as an activity center where receptions, parties and conferences can be held.
