Local Doctor guilty of malpractice

LOGAN — A civil jury has found a local surgeon, Dr. Scott W. Grover, guilty of medical malpractice. It was almost midnight Tuesday when a civil jury in Logan’s First District court found the general surgeon guilty of malpractice in connection with the death of 59-year-old Marlene Friedli. The jury reached a plaintiff’s verdict in the amount of $1,489,000. This is believed to be a record medical malpractice verdict for Cache County.

Court records show Friedli died approximately two-months after a surgery conducted by Grover. Grover conducted a laparoscopic surgery on Friedli back on October 28, 2004 at the Cache Valley Specialty Hospital, which has since been re-named Cache Valley Hospital.

The complaint filed against Grover says he placed an instrument into Friedli’s throat which was very difficult to remove. In the process of getting it out, her esophagus was penetrated. The civil complaint says efforts were not made to determine the reason for fluid in her chest.

Several other malpractice complaints against Grover are pending in First District Court and one in Federal Court as well.
