Roasting machine catches fire at Caffe Ibis Roasting

A roasting machine caught fire at the Caffe Ibis Roasting facility in Logan Tuesday morning. Fire units from Logan, North Logan, Smithfield and Cache County responding to roasting facility at 710 West 200 North at approximately 10:14 a.m.

According to a press release, the fire department found a heavy amount of smoke coming from a large vent in the roof when they first arrived. After making contact with facility representatives fire officials determined that a fire had started in the chafe collector of a coffee roasting machine and spread to an exhaust afterburner.

Firefighters fought the fire from above and from below, using water to extinguish the fire through the top of the exhaust vent and also in the bottom of the chafe collector. Some disassembly of the venting system was needed to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

Total damage from the fire is estimated at $2000, mostly due to the downtime in the facility to disassemble, clean and reassemble the 1950s era roasting machine. No damage was done to the building and the business anticipates being back in production the next day.

After an initial investigation, the cause of the fire has been determined as accidental and originated in the chafe collector of the system by the ignition of creosol type build in the exhaust system. No injuries were reported.
