Funeral planned for Hyrum Reservoir drowning victim

Funeral services have been scheduled for an 18-year-old Garland man. Judd J. Miller drowned while cliff jumping with friends at Hyrum Reservoir.

According to his obituary, Miller was a senior at Bear River High School, where he was scheduled to graduate June 8 with academic scholarships and awards. He had a passion for sports and earned All Region awards in football and track.

Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said Miller was with a group of approximately 40 youth, cliff jumping on the east side of the lake at Big Toe, Friday afternoon. He was seen jumping from the cliff and then struggling after surfacing. He went back under the water and did not resurface again.

Members of the group attempted to find Miller unsuccessfully while a woman called 911. The accident was reported at 2:25 p.m.

Rescue units from the Cache County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, officers from State Parks and medical personnel responded to the scene. They recovered Miller’s body about five-hours later.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Garland Tabernacle. A viewing will be held Wednesday evening and just prior to the services.

Miller is survived by his parents, Kirk and Marie, and four older siblings. He recently had received an LDS mission call to Pachuca, Mexico.
