The Aggies blew Fresno State out of the water Monday night, en route to a 76-39 stomping. With the win, the Aggies clinched at least a share of their third straight WAC regular season championship.
"It was a lot easier than I expected," head coach Stew Morrill said after the game. "I am pleased with our guys that were ready to play, and to play hard."
Utah State stepped on the gas early, and never let their foot off of the pedal. The Aggies jumped out to an amazing 22-0 lead, until Mike Ladd scored Fresno's first bucket of the night with 10:09 left in the first half. It was a long night for the Bulldogs, who shot only 18% from the field in the first half, and 22% on the night on 12-54 shooting. This was due to stifling defense by USU, who forced 16 Fresno turnovers, and an inablility to make long distance shots. The Bulldogs were a horrid 10% from three point land, going 2-20.
"They had a hard time scoring, and I thought that we were certainly a part of that," Morrill said. "It was a tough night for them, and a pretty good night for us."
"I don't remember a game where we started off 22-0," junior forward Tai Wesley said. "It was kinda weird.... We kinda just ran away with it."
Offensively, Utah State got the job done with great teamwork and passing. USU recorded assists on 25 of their 31 baskets, and took care of the ball well, only turning it over nine times.
"I think that our guards did real well in handling the ball, and staying composed, and running the offense," Wesley said.
Wesley was also a huge factor in the Utah State victory. The team leader ended the game with 21 points on 10-13 shooting. He also had seven rebounds, five assists, and a block to go along with the offense. Wesley even went so far as to break out his long range game when he attempted a three point shot late in the game. The shot clanked off the front of the rim, and the miss was the first missed three of Tai's career. Coming into the game, he was 2-2 from downtown as an Aggie.
"I know, I messed up the hundred percent tonight," Wesley said when asked about the attempt. "I shot it, and it felt good, but I knew that Coach Morrill would have ripped me if I didn't go for the rebound.
"After I came back out, he said 'Next time you shoot a three, act like you are supposed to make it.' So next time, I guess I will hold my follow through, and start running back like I know it's in."
"(Tai) got a little carried away when he took a three," said Morrill. "I told him 'If you're gonna shoot a frozen rope, you might as well rebound it.' Which is what he did."
Utah State will now have the remainder of the week to scout and prepare for New Mexico State. With a win on Saturday against the southern Aggies, USU will clinch the outright WAC title.
"They'd like to win it outright. They want to try to win the thing outright," Morrill said. "It's been an awfully solid run with a lot of good kids. You immediately start worrying about New Mexico State. You don't really set and reflect on the fact that we are at least co-champions again. At some point, I will jump around and feel good about it, I guess."
