The outbreak of the Swine Flu Virus has provided Utah public health officials with a chance to test the response plans they have worked out in drills. Filled with real-time pressure, the outbreak showed how quickly agencies could activate command centers and how fast hospitals could get protective gear and flu swab kits to staff.It also showed gaps in the distribution of anti-viral medications and how to treat and educate non-English speakers and the uninsured. Utah Department of Health Executive Director Dr. David Sundwall says there were also some surprises, including confusion and debate between state and local health agencies about how to best use Utah’s stockpile of anti-viral medications.
