Strang And Goble Sit First And Third After Day One Of WAC Championships

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State men’s and women’s track and field began day one as host of the Western Athletic Conference Championships with the multi-events. Senior John Strang, the two-time defending WAC decathlon champion, leads with 3,866 points after day one action.”Coming into the meet, we knew John Strang was favored to win it, so it is no surprise that he is where he is. He didn’t have a great day, but he had a good, solid day and that’s what we needed from him,” said veteran USU head coach Gregg Gensel.Freshman Jon Goble also competed and after the end of the first day’s events, he has 3,548 points, highlighted by a personal-best time of 49.86 in the 400m dash.”Jon Goble is doing great,” Gensel said. “You like kids who ante up when the meet’s on the line and he’s done a good job of coming through. He did great in the high jump and got a PR in the 400.”Strang started out the day winning the 100m clocking in at a career-best 10.67. Goble followed close behind finishing in second at 11.08, tying his season-best in the event.Strang went on to win the long jump setting another career best at 23-4.50 (7.13m). Goble finished in fifth-place in the event at 20-03.75 (6.10m).In the shot put Goble finished in sixth-place at 36-04.75 (11.08m) while Strang finished in tenth-place at 29-02.50 (8.90m).Strang took first in the high jump 6-08.25 (2.04m) and Goble finished in third-place at 6-02.25 (1.89m).In the 400m Strang took second-place clocking in at 49.76. Goble set a new PR clocking in at 49.86 tabbing third-placeAfter day one Strang leads with 3,866 points and is followed by Fresno State’s Matt Bushnell with 3,591 points. Goble is in third-place with 3,549 points.”We want to keep plugging away, doing the things they’re capable of doing and if they can do that, good things will happen,” said Gensel about Thursday’s conclusion of the decathlon.In the women’s heptathlon, Annett Wichmann of Hawai’i leads after the first day with 3,233 points, while teammate Emily Sheppard is second with 3,073 points. Darcy Collins of Idaho is third with 3,025 points. Utah State does not have any competitors in the heptathlon.The men’s decathlon will resume Thursday, May 14 at 1 p.m. and the women’s heptathlon will follow at 1:30 p.m. The rest of the events will begin Friday, May 15 with field events starting at 12:30 p.m. with running events beginning at 2 p.m. On Saturday, field event get underway at 12:30 p.m. with running events starting at 5 p.m., with the final event of the championships starting at 7:25 p.m.Ticket prices for Thursday’s conclusion of the multi-events is $8 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and youth.
