The current recession has caused a lot of people to look for ways to save money. Planners believe that’s why so many people signed up for a plot in the community guards that opened last weekend near the Thomas Aquinas Catholic Chuch in Hyde Park. Cache County Agricultural Extension Agent Clark Israelsen says for other families and individuals there’s been a significant increase in gardening this year. “There’s even been quite an increased interest in folks having chickens to lay eggs and/or for meat production,” says Israelsen. “So we’ve also been responding to an increased number of questions from folks on poultry production. But yes, there is a definite interest in trying to become a little more self-sufficient and raise and produce things on our own.” Craig Hislop’s full interview with Israelsen will be aired on “KVNU’s “For the People” talk show Wednesday afternoon.
