A lot of people will be placing flowers on the graves of loved ones at local cemeteries this Memorial Day Holiday weekend. As Commander of the American Legion Post 12, Gary Griffin says he hopes the public will remember the real purpose of Memorial Day, and that is to honor the soldiers who have died in our nations’ wars.Griffin served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force for 24 years and got to know soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Griffin says the American Legion posts throughout the country place hundreds of American flags in cemeteries on Memorial Day to honor those soldiers. When asked if he feels we are as safe as a country today as we were eight years ago, Griffin says he’s not so sure. “If you listen to the President, we’re safer. If you listen to Mr. Cheney … we’re not as safe,” Griffin said on KVNU’s Crosstalk Show Friday. “I tend to agree with Mr. Cheney,” Griffin continued. “I don’t believe that we’re completely safe. I don’t think that closing Guatanemo Bay and bringing those terrorists into our own country is a good idea. Apparently most of the United States Senate agrees with me.”Griffin says the Memorial Day Tribute Concert at Utah State University Monday night will not only feature talented performer Donny Osmond, but will also offer patriotic numbers by the American Festival Chorus and Orchestra.
