It’s a rocky start to the Memorial Day weekend on Cache Valley roads. Utah Highway Patrol Sargent Rick Mayo says a fatal crash happened in Sardine Canyon Saturday morning, and a serious motorcycle crash happened in Logan Canyon Friday night. Both appear to be alcohol related. The crash Friday night involved a young man from Centerville. Mayo says the man wasn’t wearing a helmet and appears to have been driving too fast. He apparently lost control, left the roadway, and ended up in Logan River. No one else was involved in the crash. The man was taken to Logan Regional Hospital and then airlifted to McKay Dee Hospital with spinal injuries. Mayo says he’s in critical condition but is expected to live.Saturday morning’s crash was also a single-vehicle crash. Just after 10 a.m. a 1993 Mazda Protégé, driven by 38-year old Rogelio Gallegos of Orem, was traveling North in Sardine Canyon. The crash happened near the mouth of the canyon on the Wellsville side.Witness accounts state the vehicle drifted toward the center cement barrier and then swerved back to the right. The car then rolled down the embankment and came to a rest in a small creek at the bottom. Gallegos was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected. He died from his injuries.Mayo says this isn’t how the UHP wanted to start a holiday weekend, but he says there are more troopers on patrol to help in all situations.
