Simmons Not Willing to Predict Economic Future

He’s not only Mayor of Providence, but Randy Simmons is also a Professor of Political Economy in the Utah State University Huntsman School of Business. Yet Simmons is not ready to predict how the economy will do in the short run or even the “medium run.”On KVNU’s Crosstalk show Tuesday, Simmons said we should not expect things to get a lot better very fast. “For example, the housing market. Last year there were 37 home permits in Providence, new home permits. The year before there were 54. The year before that there were nearly 90. So far this year I don’t think we’re up to 5 yet.” The mayor’s first four year term ends this year and he does not plan to run again, although he feels it has been a great experience. Providence City celebrates its 150th birthday on Saturday and Mayor Simmons invites everyone in Cache Valley to attend at least some of the activities.
