Aggies Have Fair Showing At US Nationals And Junior Nationals

Eugene, Ore. – Three members of the Utah State men’s track and field team competed at the United States Track & Field Nationals and Junior Nationals this weekend. Aggies senior Nick Karren, junior Steve Strickland and freshman Bryce Hall performed well in the 400 hurdles, 3,000m steeplechase and the junior nationals shot put and discus, respectively.”Nationals is the biggest platform for track and field athletes and we are proud to have all three of them perform well and represent Utah State on a national stage,” USU veteran head coach Gregg Gensel said.On Thursday, USU junior Steve Strickland competed in the first round of the 3,000sc and clocked in at 8:57.45, collecting 18th. Strickland’s time was not quite fast enough to advance to the next round of the competition. He missed qualifying for the next round by four spots. The 14th finisher, Adidas’ Luke Watson clocked in at 8:45.23.”Steve ran well and to be 18th at Nationals is an accomplishment, unfortunately he didn’t make it to the next round but he still preformed well,” Gensel said.Hall tabbed a 16th place finish in the only round of the men’s Junior Nationals shot put with a distance of 55-11.75 (17.06m). On Saturday, Hall finished 12th in the discus at 170-03 (51.90m) which is a PR for the freshman.”Bryce has done great, especially for a freshman,” Gensel said. “It was great to end his freshman year with a new PR.”Karren finished the 400 hurdles in 52.51, good for a 20th place finish. Karren missed the qualifying spot for the next round by four spots. The 16th finisher, Alie Beauvais of Albany clocked in at 51.63.”Nick is such a hard worker and preformed really well today as he always does,” Gensel said.The U.S. Nationals and Junior Nationals action is the final track and field competition for the Aggie track & field program until the 2010 indoor season opens in early January.
