Utah State Wins National Championship for Most Economically Efficient Athletics Department

LOGAN, Utah Utah State has been crowned the national champion of the Excellence in Management Cup, presented by Texas A&M’s Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics (LSIA) it was announced on Monday. The purpose of the Excellence in Management Cup is to determine which athletic departments win the most championships in accordance to financial expenditures. The Excellence in Management Cup awards athletic departments that win the most conference and national championships, while at the same time have the lowest expenses.”I’ve talked a lot recently about the high-rate of return that our donors, students and friends are receiving on their investment in our student-athletes and athletic programs,” said USU Director of Athletics Scott Barnes. “This rate of return is measured by the success our student-athletes have in the classroom, in competition, and ultimately in their contribution to the communities for which they will live and serve in upon graduation. This award truly confirms the notion that we are doing more with less and being good stewards of the resources we do have.”During the 2008-09 academic year, Utah State won a school-record tying five conference championships, which is its most since joining the WesternAthletic Conference four years ago. USU also won five league titles in 1994 and 1998 as a member of the Big West Conference. Teams that won conference championships for USU this past season were men’s and women’s cross country, women’s soccer, men’s basketball, and men’s outdoor track and field.Along with its five conference championships in 2008-09, Utah State also finished second in the WAC in men’s indoor track, while men’s golf, women’sindoor and outdoor track & field, and women’s volleyball all finished fourth.Following Utah State in the top five for the Excellence in Management Cup were Kent State, Louisiana Tech, Akron and BYU. Results also show that the major universities may not be running as economically sound as some smaller universities. The top-10 ranked departments were all from non-BCSaffiliated universities. The highest ranked BCS program was Oregon at No.11.The scores are calculated in formula that accounts for total athletic department spending, number of sports played, and the number of conference and national championships won by each Division I (FBS) university. For a complete list of results and additional information of the Excellencein Management Cup results, please visit the Laboratory for the Study ofIntercollegiate Athletics at
