Morrill opposes landlord licensing

It’s coming up at tonight’s meeting of the Logan Municipal Council, a proposed ordinance that would require owners of rental units to be licensed. Logan Mayor Randy Watts, who is running for election to a second term this year, supports the program for what he calls “safety reasons.” One of his challengers, Mike Morrill, opposes landlord licensing. The Logan business owner says he is also a landlord. “We need the cooperation of the landlords to help us with meth, with illegal activities, to help us with beautifying their properties,” Morrill says. “I really do believe if we sit down and talk to them and address the issues we can get it cleaned up but we really need to do that. ” We’re not enforcing laws right now that say 3 unrelated people can live in an apartment and we want to enforce more laws that will not be enforced across the board.” Another Watts challenger John P. Clay is against landlord licensing. The other candidate, city employee Marc Haws, has not expressed his view on the issue.
