Herbert to succeed Huntsman as Utah governor

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert will become Utah’s 17th governor following the resignation of Gov. Jon Huntsman.Huntsman is scheduled to resign Tuesday morning to become U.S. ambassador to China.Herbert will immediately assume the duties of governor upon Huntsman’s resignation, but the Utah Constitution also requires him to take an oath of office, which is scheduled for noon.Huntsman is a moderate Republican who was the most popular governor in state history, winning re-election in November with a record 77 percent of the vote.Huntsman led efforts to normalize the state’s notoriously quirky liquor laws and revamped the state’s tax code while in office. Before being tapped by President Barack Obama as an ambassador, Huntsman had been considering seeking the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in 2012.
